Africa does not need permission

I want us to engage the world from a position of confidence, capability and ownership — not from a position of gratitude.

THE POSTURE PROBLEM

There is a posture I keep noticing when Africa meets the world. We arrive grateful. We arrive explaining ourselves. We arrive hoping to be chosen.

I do not think our problem is capability. I think a large part of it is posture.

GRATITUDE IS NOT A STRATEGY

Gratitude is a virtue in a relationship between equals. It becomes a trap when it is the entire basis of the relationship.

When we treat every partnership as a favour, we negotiate badly. We accept terms we would question if we believed we were bringing something of value. And we are bringing something of value — markets, talent, resources, ideas and a young population that the rest of the world is short of.

WHAT OWNERSHIP MEANS TO ME

Ownership is not isolation. I am not arguing that we close ourselves off, refuse capital or reject collaboration. That would be foolish.

Ownership means we decide what gets built, who it serves and who holds the upside. It means African problems are solved by people who have lived them, with structures that keep the value on the continent.

Permission-seeking asks: will you let us? Ownership asks: what are the terms?

THE PART THAT IS ON US

It would be dishonest to make this only a story about the outside world.

If we want to be treated as equals we have to build things that work — institutions that keep records, businesses that deliver, systems that outlast the person who started them. Confidence without competence is just noise.

So the work is double: change the posture, and earn the posture.

WHAT I AM DOING ABOUT IT

I build enterprises rather than appeals. I would rather create a structure that generates value than an argument that requests it.

I focus on young people, because posture is formed early. A student who believes their ideas belong in the room will negotiate differently at thirty than one who was taught to be thankful for the chair.

And I keep saying it out loud, because narrative is infrastructure too.

THE CLOSING POINT

Africa is not waiting to be discovered. We are not a pending application.

We do not need permission to build. We need clarity, capability and the discipline to finish.

THE VISION IS CLEAR. NOW WE BUILD.
